Help! Help! I can’t swim!

Orchard Road Flood

My Twitter and Facebook feeds are all a-flutter. Looking at all the photos coming in, I’m sure glad I’m at work, and not at Orchard Road right now.

Of course, in 1999 we were promised that Orchard Road would NEVER flood.

To be fair, 1999 was quite a long time ago (holy crap I was still in primary school then!) It was probably true that Singapore’s drainage system with infallible at that time. In fact, Singapore probably still has a really good drainage system compared to some other countries.

However, since 1999 we’ve been building more and more offices, condos, hotels, luxury apartments and mega-malls (just look at ION!)… but have we been developing the drainage systems at the same time? Surely it doesn’t make sense that we are building more and more and blocking off natural drainage areas, yet still expect the old drainage system to work?

If 1999 was the last time anyone took a look at the drainage system, we’re in serious trouble.

    • It’s awful, isn’t it? I’m sure this could have been prevented in some way, or at least alleviated!
